Southern Rockhounds Inc., is very proud of the link between the local Worthing Mine situated at Hallett Cove on the Field River and the Moonta Pump House and Chimney as shown on the badge. The Worthing Mine was worked for copper and was registered in 1849 but did not return dividens. The main shaft is 72 metres in depth. After the mine was closed the 36" cylinder steam engine was hauled from Worthing Mine to Moonta and became the first engine used there. The Cornish Chimney still stands poudly in silent witness of this early chapter in the history of South Australia, although the Engine House shows its age. Southern Rockhounds Inc. are delighted to acknowledge the connection of the Worthing and Moonta mines as part of South Australia's mining heritage. Members Area Access Updated 4/08/10
